Uruguay Opens as Betting Favorite at the World Cup Group A

As far as pure talent goes Uruguay is tops in Group A of the World Cup.  With this in mind they are the Betting the World Cup chalk of the foursome.  But Russia remains a wild card.  No team will play with more passion or motivation.  As the host team they will be carrying the hopes of their country.  Not to mention their President Vladimir Putin.  Egypt has emerged as a trendy value pick.  But they are still not considered a legitimate contender.  Meanwhile Saudi Arabia looks hopeless against the other three Group A teams.

Advantage for Uruguay

Stability at the top is a big Betting the World Cup advantage for Uruguay.  Oscar Tabarez is in his 12th consecutive year as team manager.  In this day and age that is an unprecedented run.  Although the two time champions last won in 1950 they command respect.  Lady Luck has shined upon them with such a favorable draw.  Group A is among the weakest at the World Cup.  Tabarez deserves credit for empowering his young players.  He has allowed the kiddie corps to take the attack with marked success.

Luis Suarez

Troubled star Luis Suarez will be key to Uruguay’s success.  While possessing unlimited talent he often can’t get out of his own way.  Suarez is among the favorites to win the Golden Ball Award.  The Golden Ball is given to the best all around player in the tournament.  Federico Valverde is a 19 year old phenom that has the look of a sportsbook game breaker.  Should Valverde live up to billing Uruguay may be primed for a deep run.

Russia has a poor history in the World Cup dating back to when it was the Soviet Union. They have won just five matches in 18 tries since Stanislav Cherchesov took over as coach in August 2016.  What sparks Russian hopes is their motivation as host country.  Not to mention their draw in mediocre and winnable Group A.  However, reality points to their players lacking experience against World Class competition.  Most of their squad plays professionally in the Russian Premier League.  The EPL it is not.  Goaltender and captain Igor Akinfeev will be relied upon to hold down the fort.

Egypt has emerged on the World Cup stage for the first time since 1990.  They have never won a World Cup tournament match.  The Pharaohs have waited 28 years for a return to the World’s Biggest Party.  While thrilled to be included they hope to build on the experience.  Recent inconsistency at international tournaments has sobered expectations.

Saudi Arabia

Few teams are bigger long shots than Saudi Arabia.  They are among the lowest ranked teams in FIFA.  The Green Falcons lack offensive firepower.  They have had to rely upon defense for their limited success.

 Matchup to Watch

June 25 is the key Betting the World Cup match in Group A.  Russia will meet Uruguay.  The home team will be the underdog but with plenty of fight.  It should be among the most spirited matches of the Group stage.
